Not all games need to be all Dire, Dire Docks to be great. So kudos to the composer for daring to do something different. I'll leave this final song, another fine example of the soundtrack's philosophy, with you guys. The kazoos don't stop, and often overpower the beautiful sounds of the guitar, but this clash of "messy, and annoying" and "soothing and adorable" is what really defines the soundtrack and what pulls this piece together making it a great song. But then around 0:28, this soothing and calm guitar comes in and makes the entire song pleasant. You're met with the Yoshi's loud and obnoxious kazoo symphony playing. This dissonance, I feel, is best portryed in the games Title Theme. Untuned, poorly played, off beat kazoos fill the song and many cry as their ears bleed, "Why isn't it beautiful like Yoshi's Island's music?!" Because it's not trying to be. This soundtrack also took awhile longer than I thought it would since I was programming some DS music conversion tools to complement others. Just listen to The Yoshi Clan for an idea of what I mean. Yoshi's Island DS Music Soundtrack (mp3) Tons of options once again Hopefully it makes a difference to offer such a variety, it sure does increase the amount of work. The game's music is quite obviously emulating the sound of how Yoshi's, a child-like race of colorful dinosaurs would play the music. On one hand you have cute, fun, lovable, and adorable, on the other hand, messy, loud, and annoying. The soundtrack is baby-like and exhibits many childish qualities. The game is about babies, and baby-like dinosaurs, and made for children. The soundtrack is not supposed to sound as pleasing as, say, Love is in the Air. So why did he churn out what many call a collection of Yoshi farts? The answer is quite simple.
The composer, at least imo, is certainly capable of creating tracks that are at worst tolerable and at best rival some of Nintendo's greatest. For example, I feel as if Bandit Valley would fit right in with other beloved melodies. I understand why people might not enjoy the risks the composer made with the soundtrack of Yoshi's New Island as it is made with an entirely different philosophy as other classics.
